Reading with Children: A Giveaway!

I love reading. I always have.

As a child, I would constantly have my head in a book and now I'm older, whenever I have some time to myself, I like nothing more than wallowing in a bubble bath with a glass of vino and a good paperback.

Daisy is a girl after my own heart and loves books too. We read every day and visit our local library and local bookshops a lot. I love that she enjoys books, even at only eighteen months. She has her favourites and likes to say the words she remembers out loud; she also loves looking at the pictures and telling me what she can see.

Reading is educational, yes, but most of all I love that it enables parents and children to spend some quality time together. In our house we always read a book or two before bedtime. It has become a nightly routine; after bathtime comes storytime and every evening as I'm putting madam's pyjamas on I am reminded of what comes next. "BOOK! BOOK! MUMMY! BOOK!"

The lovely people at Anova Books recently sent me a set of Terry Jones childrens books. Yes that's right, Terry Jones of Monty Python fame! The stories are absolutely brilliant,  great reads for adults and kids alike, and the books themselves are just beautiful to look at - Michael Foreman's illustrations are out of this world.

So it is with grrrrrreat pleasure that I am hosting the very first Modern Mummy giveaway. A full set of signed, hardback Terry Jones books - "Unbelievable Adventures and Fantastic Stories", "Enchanting and Thrilling Fairy Tales" and "Incredible Animal Tales".

If you would like to be in with a chance of winning these books, be it for yourself or for your kids, all you have to do is subscribe to this blog through Google Connect or NetworkedBlogs and leave a comment in the box below.

Now for the boring stuff! The competition will close at 23.59 GMT on Tuesday, 24 May 2011 and I will randomly select a winner the following day using random.org's random number generator. The winner will be announced on this blog, on the Modern Mummy facebook page and on Twitter. This competition is open to UK residents only.

These books can also be purchased direct from Anova here, or for those local readers, Langton's Bookshop on Church Street in Twickenham also have copies for sale.

Good luck everyone! x

  1. I might not have a great deal of time these days to read a good book myself (really miss that)but Poppy LOVES books and we read A LOT & I always make sure the older two get a bedtime story every night. The most favourite favouritest book in the world ever (at the moment) is You choose by Pippa Goodhart. Charlie would read it EVERY night if I let him:

  3. To say I was a prolific reader would be an understatement....I used to have to pack 14 books, and maybe an extra one, to make sure I had enough for my two week holiday! Now, as a mum, my reading time has lessened, but I LOVE getting to share this and encourage the same with Matilda....and yes, I loved the Roald Dahl book :)

  4. What a wonderful prize, sure to be enjoyed by child and parent alike.
I think the mark of a good children's book is one that as the parent you can read as many times as the child wants and still enjoy it yourself.

  7. Reading is such a wonderful pastime, me and Jacob love nothing more than mooching around our local library and having a cuddle on the sofa reading a book together. I love to read though I dont have the time as much as I used to, but nothing develops the imagination in the way a fantastic book does xx
