Food and Mummy Blogging - Two of my Favourite Things



I love food. I love reading recipe books (and looking at the pictures even more). I love cooking and baking, for myself and other people. I love experimenting with ingredients and coming up with new ideas. I love sitting down to eat round the table with friends and family (and lots of wine). And I love talking about food and sharing recipes with other people. 

I also love blogging and am amazed by the brilliant sense of community between all us mummy bloggers. (Soppy, sentimental outburst over, I promise!)
 
In an attempt to bring my two loves together I have started posting recipes on my blog regularly which, going by my stats, appear to have been rather popular. I like to think that you lot are enjoying reading them and hope that you have tried some of the recipes out for yourselves.
 
I, in turn, have been avidly reading (and testing out!) other Mummy Blogger's recipes. My favourites, and most successful, to date have been:

I have been thinking of further ways of bringing Recipes and Mummy Blogging together and have come up with an idea that I wanted to put to you all.
 
It is one not dissimilar to the lovely Tara Cain's 'The Gallery', only food related, not photography.  
 
In an attempt to share the foodie love, I am toying with the idea of preparing a weekly post where I announce an ingredient and call on anyone that is interested to share a recipe of their own that includes that ingredient.
 
I will give you all a few days to think about it, and try out any new recipes you have come across, then will set up a Linky Tool so that everyone can leave details of their recipe (via their blog) all in one place, and other people can to refer to them for inspiration.
 
So are any of you interested? Not necessarily just in posting recipes either; would people like a collection of recipes focusing on, say "cake" or "mincemeat" (not together, yeuch) all in one easily accessible place? Or is there something similar out there already that I can take part in?
 
Any thoughts and comments will be greatly appreciated.

The Gallery: Children



This week's theme for The Gallery is children.

I toyed with the idea of being super creative and putting together a montage of photos of my daughter, myself, my mum and my nan, all taken when we were the same age. Then I thought about being clever and having a photo taken of us all together, four generations, as ultimately we are all somebody's children.

In the end I took what I think is quite possibly THE most ba-yoo-tiful photo of my little monkey EVER and I decided to use it as my entry. As per usual its just a quick snap taken on my iPhone using my trusty Hipstamatic app - but I think it is the loveliest photo I have ever seen. (Yes, I know I am biased!!) 
Daisy was in the bath, being ridiculously cute as always. She reminds me of a Pears Soap model from their advertising campaigns of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in this photo. What do you all think?

Sweetie Pies Boutique Bakery, Twickenham ---- A Review


Hidden away down Twickenham's pretty, cobbled Church Street is Sweetie Pies, a boutique bakery and tea room. Being a cake addict, it will come as no surprise that I have popped in for a box of cupcakes on more than a few occasions (I have to buy boxes at a time because my work colleagues at the 9-5 love them---- that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!) but I have never had the pleasure of sitting down and enjoying a pot of tea in the bakery before.... until yesterday when Daisy and I visited Nicola to chat about three of my favourite things - tea, cakes and crafts!

Sweetie Pies is a gorgeous shop that sells cupcakes, brownies, cookies and scones - all hand baked, iced and decorated using fresh local ingredients in their small bakery just down the road. The shop is beautifully decorated and deceptively spacious. Floral wallpaper and bunting adorn the walls, the furniture is gloriously shabby chic and high tea is served on gorgeous vintage china; spending the afternoon there really is a treat.
 





However it isn't a treat specifically aimed at adults as you might expect, it is in fact an exceptionally child friendly tea room. Sweetie Pies are well known for their fabulous children's parties, during which cakes and sandwiches are served on china plates (not a paper plate in sight!) and party games, like pin the cherry on the cupcake, are played. The parties last an hour and a half and during that time the guests also get to decorate their own cupcake and decorate a box in which to take it home. It is a fantastic afternoon for the birthday child, their parents and their guests alike - everything is covered within the party package and as the birthday child's parent you have nothing to do except sit back, relax and enjoy yourself.

But cake decorating isn't just reserved for the children - us adults can do it too! Birthday parties, hen parties and baby showers are also catered for at the bakery and during these events, not only do you get to sample a delicious high tea, you are also taught the art of making sugar paste flowers and how to make and pipe buttercream icing. Other seasonal craft sessions are also held at the shop for both adults and children and information about these can be found on the website.

In the shop itself there is plenty of room for buggies and a mini table and chairs on offer for younger children, as well as high chairs for babies. If you want to relax and unwind with a cup of tea, there are books and crayons to keep your children entertained and not only does the shop sell edible treats, it also sells loose leaf tea to take away and lots of cupcake related trinketry and gifts.
 
With Valentine's Day fast approaching Sweetie Pies are doing a special offer of either 24 mini cupcakes or 12 regular ones for the fantastic price of £18 and I know that I will be hinting for one of their buttercream cupcake bouquets from my other half (stunning and only £20 - although I'm not sure they would last as long as a real bouquet of flowers; Daisy and I would not be able to resist getting stuck in straight away!!!)

7 Things You Didn't Know About Me

Ooh I love a good Meme!

ChocOrangeCityMum and Liz at Violet Posy have both tagged me in a great one - 7 Things You Didn't Know About Me! Seeing as I am a Twitterholic and I bore you all with a tweet virtually every ten minutes, most of you probably know more about me than you (and I!) think - but here are a few things you definitely didn't know.... until now!





1. I can't bear to touch untreated wood – I can’t use the wooden sticks/spoons you get in coffee shops or pick up ice lollies on sticks and the thought of any of them touching my teeth makes me want to be sick!

2. I make sex noises as I drift off to sleep, even though I am not having rude thoughts. Everyone thinks this is hilarious. I do not. It's E M B A R R A S S I N G.

3. When I listen to the radio the volume level has to be either a multiple of 2 or a multiple of 5.

4. I once drank a bottle of tomato ketchup in a restaurant for a bet and earned myself £25.

5. My most overused saying is “OH! THIS IS MY FAVOURITE SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

6. My nickname is Scrubber…….. because I have OCD when it comes to cleaning – NOT because I am a dirt box, thank you very much.

7. I have always had a freckle on my jaw but no one seems to remember it is there; I am repeatedly told by the same people that I ‘have a bit of chocolate’ on my face.
And one more for you as a special treat!!

8. My first car was a bright red Renault 4 called PP and I sold it on ebay in 2002 for £300 because I couldn’t afford to pay for the work it needed. That is one of my biggest regrets ever!

So there you have it! Not seven but EIGHT things you didn't know about me! What don't I know about you?!

The Gallery: Mother Nature



Another great theme for The Gallery this week! I had so many ideas and took some great photos over the weekend but my entry is my favourite one of all - a view of the sea fom the cliffs in Saunton, Devon.

Daisy and I visited our friend in Croyde this weekend. I love getting out of London and do so at every opportunity. My favourite place to be is by the sea and I love the beach in winter so much more than in the summer. The beaches along the North Devon coast are, in my opinion, some of the best in Britain so I was very excited to visit Croyde for the first time.

The weekend was spent eating lovely food, drinking lovely wine and taking lots of walks along the blustery, wintery beach. My idea of heaven. 

Then, when driving home on the Sunday evening we passed this wonderful view and I had to stop to take a photo. It was an unbelievable, stormy day (my favourite kind when it comes to English beaches!) and everything was so windswept that the thick, low clouds looked like mountains on the horizon and it was hard to tell where the sand dunes ended and the sea started.

Mother Nature at her best.

Raisins to be Cheerful



Raisins are the bane of my life. Seriously.

Put bluntly, they repulse me. Quite why anyone would want to put a shrivelled up old grape in their mouth is beyond me. They are a horrible texture, they look disgusting and, in my eyes, something that small can't possibly be of any nutritional value. So what's the point in them?!

They are, of course, a very popular snack for children. I can't deny that they have a lot going for them in that respect; being naturally sweet and therefore a healthier choice than biscuits or chocolate - plus a little box of Sun-Maid is easy to carry around with you when you're out and about. Much easier than a pear or a banana. They also have a long shelf life and are relatively cheap compared to other fruits.

I must confess that despite my hatred of them, I do buy them; not only as a snack for madam, but also for their entertainment value. She will happily sit and eat them one at a time (this can keep her occupied for a full five minutes if I'm lucky) and she also likes to shake them about - usually when they are in an open box or cup - which brings me onto the main reason why I despise the little buggers.

They get everywhere. EVERYWHERE! I find them down the side of the sofa, squashed on the floor, in my handbag, in the toy box, in the car. I have even found them in the washing machine, and on one occasion I found one nestled snugly in my bra at the end of the day *shudder* Handling them while they are in their box I can bear, picking them up off the floor I cannot.

Writing about them is, in all honesty, making me feel a bit queasy. In fact I think it would be quite fair to say I am a sufferer of inyphobia. The Urban Dictionary's definition of this is: "for one to have an immense fear/phobia of raisins, currents & sultanas resulting in just a mention of the words can bring on gipping and gagging some times resulting in sickness". This sums my feelings and reactions up perfectly.


So I was wondering..... what strange phobias do you all suffer from?

Celebrity Gossip - A Week of Pregnancy Press Releases!





 
 
 
Wow. What a week its been in the world of celebrity pregnancies and birth announcements. It's only January and 2011 is already set for a massive celebrity baby boom!
 
For those of you that have haven't been paying attention this is what you have missed!
 
Last Friday Miranda Kerr gave birth to a son (a first child for her and Orlando Bloom). The yet unnamed baby weighed in at almost ten pounds! 
 
On Monday Victoria Beckham announced that she and David are expecting their fourth child and already bets are being placed with bookies about the baby's sex - the odds currently stand at 10/11 favourite that they have a girl and 5/6 that it’s a fourth boy.
 
On Tuesday we got two for the price of one when it was revealed that Owen Wilson is due to become a Dad any day now, plus Marion Cotillard confirmed her pregnancy. She and her boyfriend, French actor and director, Guillaume Canet, are expecting their first baby this spring.
 
Wednesday brought news of singer Jewel's pregnancy. Jewel and her husband, rodeo star Ty Murray are expecting to hear the pitter patter of tiny feet in the summer.
 
Thursday was the day for Kate Hudson's announcement that she is expecting baby no.2 (her first with Muse rocker Matt Bellamy) and today Selma Blair and Devon Aoki have confirmed their pregnancies too.
 
Natalie Portman is also four months pregnant and Jennifer Connelly revealed last month that she and husband Paul Bettany are expecting their second child.
 
So who will be releasing tomorrow's pregnancy press release!? I can't wait to find out!!

Foodie Friday---- Mixed Bean Chilli



This is a self invented detox friendly recipe. It is so good for you its ridiculous; it contains about a million of your five a day - and you can add and remove ingredients to suit your taste buds. Even though its detox friendly, there is nothing stopping you whipping this bad boy up at any time of the year - I actually prefer it to the meat variety! Most importantly, it is so simple, it is impossible to muck up.

The ingredients I am going to list below are my particular favourites but you really can chuck anything in here. Its a perfect 'end of the week' meal where you can use up everything that is left in your fridge and cupboards the night before you do your weekly shop. The only vital ingredients are the beans - they can be either tinned or dried but remember dried need to be soaked overnight in advance. You can also add lentils for extra protein. When it comes to chopping the veg in this recipe, I like them nice and chunky!

This recipe will feed four very hungry mouths. Possibly even six of you if you're not as greedy as me and Himself. You can keep any leftovers in the fridge for a day or two.





Ingredients.
Olive oil
2x red onions
Fresh chilli and/or dried chilli flakes ---- or both!
1x vegetable stock cube
1x tin of chopped tomatoes (plus half the tin again of water)
1x red pepper
1x green pepper
1x yellow pepper
2x portobello mushrooms
Handful frozen peas
Handful frozen sweetcorn
200g tin cannellini beans
200g tin black eyed beans
200g tin red kidney beans
200g tin flageolet beans
A splash of Worcestershire sauce
Rice to serve
A dollop of sour cream is also nice (so long as you're not detoxing!)




What to do.
Roughly chop all the veg.
Soften the onions in the olive oil, then add the chillies, peppers and mushrooms, shortly followed by the tin of chopped tomatoes and water.
Sprinkle the veggie stock cube into the pan and drain the tins of beans.
Add the beans and frozen veg to the mixture, and add a little bit more water to it if necessary.
Add the dried chilli flakes if you like your food hot!
Give the pan a good stir then leave to simmer for 15 mins +. I normally leave it for about 20 mins (whilst the rice is cooking).
Boil the rice.
Just before dishing up add a generous splash of Worcestershire sauce to the chilli; it gives it a nice kick.



Serve with said dollop of sour cream or a sprinkling of cheddar cheese (if you're not detoxing) and of course a big fat glass of vino goes without saying. I would recommend a nice Beaujolais.

Krafty Kidz, Twickenham---- A Review

Krafty Kidz


As a Twickenham based Mum, I am always keen to hear about things to do with my daughter in the local area. When walking into town recently I stumbled upon Krafty Kidz - a brilliant craft workshop and activities centre, perfectly located in the heart of Twickenham. Advertised outside was their 'Paint for a Pound' offer which enticed me in straight away and resulted in me and Daisy having one of our best afternoons together ever. 

The shop is owned by Julie and Tony, a party entertainer and magician respectively, and together they run both pre-booked and drop in crafty activities for children of all ages.

Their Paint for a Pound offer is by far the most fabulous idea I have ever come across - all materials are provided and your child can make as much mess as they like without you having to clear it up! Daisy had a brilliant time covering herself in paint (and getting some on the paper too) and created her very first finger painted masterpiece. And I had a lovely coffee and slice of cake while she did it!

Before we left I decided to book Daisy and myself in for one of their Music and Motion sessions. These are run every Monday and, at £4.00 for 45 minutes, really is a bargain. I'm not sure who had more fun - me reminiscing about my childhood whilst singing along to childhood nursey rhymes or Daisy being let loose in a fabulous child friendly room filled with musical instruments for her to shake and bang to her hearts content.

Craft sessions are also held there which are perfect for older kids and you can drop in for play sessions too. The shop is also available for private hire at the weekends.

The cafe area is bright and spacious (plenty of room for buggies and shopping bags) and it is a great place to visit with other mums; you can relax and let your children play safely whilst enjoying a good old fashioned gossip and fantastic coffee.

I can't recommend Krafty Kidz enough and think its lovely to have a place like this so close to home. If you are passing, make sure you pop in and see how fabulous it is for yourself.

Detox: The End is Nigh


"WHAT is a picture of a grande triple shot sugar free vanilla cappuccino and a bath bun doing on the Modern Mummy blog?" I hear you say....
 
Forgive me Father, for I have sinned. Or rather, I have given up the detox after a fourteen day stint.
 
For the first time in my many Januaries of detoxing I have to confess that I have really struggled. Really really struggled. Not through hunger or lack of results, but through awful, glutenous, unadulterated cravings (and no I'm not pregnant before you ask). I have lost my willpower; the allure of caffeine and cake got too much for me and I buckled.
 
I started detoxing on 28th December and caved this morning. My week two weigh in revealed that I had lost a whopping 10lbs, which in my eyes is two much too soon. With this playing on my mind on my journey to the office, I stepped off the bus and straight into my local bakery. A force of nature then brought me to Starbucks where my friendly local barister was so pleased to see me she gave me a free coffee! It was the sign I needed that I was making the right decision. 
 
It is my full intention to carry on with my healthy eating and, as always after detoxing, I am full of inspiration for meals that don't consist of your standard meat and two veg (recipes will be forthcoming, I promise).
 
So for the rest of the month I am reverting back to my regular views of everything in moderation. Hopefully I will continue to shed a few more pounds, albeit at a slower and healthier rate. And I can enjoy a (thin) slice of black forest gateau from Patisserie Valerie whilst doing so.
 
For those of you that are still going strong, well done and keep it up! And if you, too, are thinking about drawing things to a close then why not take a look at the Ubermummy diet which, in my eyes, is a great way to carry on the good work in a slightly more relaxed manner.
 
In the meantime I am going to spend the rest of today day dreaming about the large glass of red wine I am going to drink once madam is in bed tonight..... cabernet sauvignon, oh how I have missed you!

No!

Angry Moo

I think my fourteen month old daughter may have reached the terrible twos a bit early. Either that or she is destined to be a diva.

She is perfectly aware of the meaning of the word 'no'. I know this because on hearing me say it, she used to stop whatever she was doing instantly and look guilty. If it was said in a slightly sterner-than-usual tone, it would sometimes even make her cry (cue me feeling awful and using every ounce of willpower not to be a pushover mother and forgive her instantly!). She also uses the word no herself. But more on that later.

Recently though, whenever I have told her 'no' - when she is slamming cupboard doors, for example, or when I catch her taking all the DVDs out from under the television, or if she is busy emptying the contents of my chest of drawers all over my bedroom, or if she is tormenting the cat - she has started to rebel.


Instead of doing as she is told, she looks me directly in the eye and carries on with whatever it is she is doing. With a smile on her face. And with even more gusto. If I repeat 'no' in the aforementioned sterner-than-usual tone, it no longer has any effect whatsoever and, instead, results in her shouting the word out herself at me, the horrible mother that is stopping her from having fun.

"No!"
"NO!"
"NOOOOO!"

I find it really hard not to laugh. Seeing such a little person acting all cross and bossy is hilarious. But what can I do!?

One of her favourite (naughty) things to do at the moment is to go into the kitchen (which is usually out of bounds thanks to a stairgate), open the cat food cupboard, take out the cat treats, shake them so that Pogg comes running, then empty the treats all over the floor - much to Pogg's delight and my dismay.

The few times I've caught her doing this I have, of course, told her "no".

So now whenever she manages to sneak into the kitchen and cause mischief, she cuts to the chase and says "no" to herself whilst doing so! And she looks me directly in the eye whilst doing it too, of course.

So, out of interest, when do you think you should start being strict with your children? At what age do you think they are old enough to know what they should or shouldn't be doing? And how do you stop yourself from giggling when they are being so funny!!?

My lovely friend Jo from Witterings of the Overtired recently posted a fantastic photo thread on her blog about how much her two gorgeous girls have grown in the past year.

It inspired me to spend the morning looking at all the lovely photos I took in 2010 (while I should have been working---- shhhhh!) and made me realise just how much I love my camera! Best invention ever. Fact.

Detox: Day Three: Detox State of Mind





Once I’ve successfully completed a couple of days of detoxing I always find that I am lulled into a false sense of security. Detoxing genuinely is easier than you’d expected and you kind of relax a bit once you’ve realised all the things you can eat, and spent an entire day without feeling hungry. Every year, without fail, I very nearly slip up on day three.

This year was no exception. True to form I woke up this morning, switched the kettle on, got a mug out of the cupboard and proceeded to gather the ingredients for my usual caffeine and sugar powered cup of morning tea. It took a comment from the Other Half to propel me back into my detox state of mind and my usual PG tips teabag was replaced by a chamomile one.

Whist detoxing I always up my intake of fluids. I drink as much water as I possibly can, have herbal teas first and last thing every day and go mad for fresh juices as well.

Its common knowledge that water is good for you, but do you know why?

It stops headaches. Whenever I have a headache, I don’t automatically reach for the nurofen, I have a glass of water first. Very often headaches are just a result of dehydration. Similarly, dehydration often makes you lose concentration so water is directly responsible for helping you concentrate too.

It’s good for the skin. Water flushes toxins out of the body and as well as hydrating your body, your skin is hydrated too.

It assists with weight loss. Often thirst is mistaken for hunger

It helps keep you regular! Although fibre is directly responsible for this, the body needs water for the fibre to work properly.

Similarly, herbal teas are proven to have health benefits. Not only are they a delicious alternative to plain water, certain ones help you to achieve a more calm, relaxed state of mind; they help with stomach and digestive problems and promote energy and wellness. Some of my favourite flavours, and their health benefits are:

Chamomile is known for its calming attributes
Fennel has been used for centuries as a digestive aid and to soothe upper respiratory problems.
Parsley has a diuretic effect and is believed to help with kidney function.
Peppermint is thought to help with stomach and digestive issues. It also helps freshen breath.
Raspberry Leaf helps with colds and sore throats, and may also keep nails, bones, teeth and skin healthy. It is also regularly drunk during the later stages of pregnancy as it is said to strengthen and tone the muscles of the uterus, helping them to contract more efficiently during labour. Research has found that taking raspberry leaf during the weeks prior to delivery helps to shorten the second stage of labour by making contractions more effective.

Drinking juice is a great way of getting fresh, raw fruits and vegetables into you. Juices should always be as fresh as possible; ideally juice fruit and veg yourself, or if you buy cartons ensure that the juice isn’t from concentrate.

Juicing is good for you because there is hardly any digestive work needed to process raw liquid. Juices get into the system quickly. Also, freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices are full of nutrients. When they are cooked or prepared, nutrients can be lost.

Happy New Year!



Jesus Christ, its 2011. How did that happen!

I’m not normally one to celebrate New Year’s Eve. I’m not a fan of traipsing up into London in the freezing cold or paying a tenner to get into my local pub. I much prefer being at home, in the warm, and preferably in my pyjamas by about 8pm. I have to confess that staying up until midnight is often pretty hard work.

With madam tucked up in bed, the Other Half and I spent this New Year’s Eve at home together with a bottle of pinot grigio, an Indian takeaway, a tub of Ben & Jerry’s Caramel Chew Chew and Jools Holland. We watched the count down and the fireworks, and listened to Auld Lang Syne. A perfect NYE if you ask me!



Every year I make dozens of resolutions, and along with the rest of the world I fail to keep them. This year however, I have taken a leaf out of Violet Posy’s book and am taking part in The Bag Lady Challenge. This is the brainchild of Shirley Lewis and the idea is to give up something that has a negative impact on the environment, and to take up something that will have a beneficial effect on it.

For my Giving Up Pledge I have decided that I am not going to accept a single plastic bag when out shopping this year. That goes for all shopping, not just food shopping. I abandoned carrier bags from the supermarket a long while ago but would still happily accept one when shopping for clothes or Christmas presents which defeats the object really. From now on, my trusty jute bag is going to be taken everywhere and used for everything. I am a member of a great group on Facebook, Banish the Plastic Bag - have a look for more information on why plastic bags are such a threat to wildlife and so bad for the environment.

For my Taking Up Pledge I have decided that I am going to take up cycling and whenever possible I will ditch the car and head out on my bike. The Other Half bought me a Pashley Princess when Daisy was born and I am ashamed to say that aside from the odd jaunt to the office during the summer it has been sorely neglected. That’s going to change this year!

I think this is a fantastic idea and hope a lot of you will jump on the bandwagon! Please let me know if you do!

Detox: Day One





Waking up with a hangover on the morning you’re starting a detox can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the level of hangover. In my case, a mild one as a result of a pre-detox pinot grigio binge, it definitely worked in my favour. Waking up feeling like shite makes detoxing suddenly become the most appealing thing in the world, however everyone knows the quick fix cure for a hangover is fried eggs and bacon (meat and dairy) with toast and butter (wheat and dairy) and a lovely sugary cup of tea (caffeine, sugar and dairy) – all of which are no goes.

Despite being bleary eyed and feeling a little bit sorry for myself, I managed to avoid all of the above and settled for a nice big bowl of granola with soya yoghurt and fresh fruit instead. I snacked on cashews and pistachios mid morning, and finished off the Christmas satsumas for good measure. Lunch was vegetarian chilli with brown rice (and a big kick!) and dinner was winter vegetables (a huge plateful of roasted parsnips and carrots, swede crush, peas, green beans and sprouts). I am currently drinking a glass of chocolate soya milk and nibbling on some raw chocolate coated goji berries.

I weighed myself this morning and was shocked to discover that during the month of December I had put on 8lbs! EIGHT POUNDS! Which gave me another big kick up the backside to do this detox, aside from just to make myself feel better generally.

So here I am. At the end of day 1. And already I’m feeling good!
