Dreaming of sunshine as the storms rage on

If you could go anywhere on holiday right now, where would it be and why?

This is what me and the mums were discussing at the school gate this morning, while gale force winds howled around us and torrential rain left us completely and utterly drenched. The general consensus was to be somewhere hot and sunny, and the conversation sent me off into a daydream about warm weather, delicious food (cooked by someone else! sigh!) and general holiday loveliness that lasted all day.

The view from the Ponte Maddelena in Lucca, Italy taken by me in 2005

In my twenties I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time in the north of ItalyIt's a beautiful place, with gorgeous mountainous countryside to admire, elegant and historical cities to explore and luxurious beaches to lounge on. The people are some of the nicest I’ve ever met and, of course, the food and the wine are utterly out of this world. Despite visiting pre-babies, I’ve always thought of Italy as being one of the most child friendly countries I’ve visited and one of my favourite things about it is how family orientated everything is out there. I think it will always be my dream holiday destination. Heck, I wouldn’t mind living there one day if I’m honest.

Without even having to think about it, my answer to the holiday question was Italy. I’d love to go back to the places I frequented so regularly all those years ago. Or so I thought! But then this afternoon I found myself googling Italian holidays and realised that in actual fact this time I think I’d opt for a break a little bit further south; somewhere brand new so that my family and I could all have an adventure together! Having done my research, if I could be anywhere in the world right now, it would most definitely be Campania and of course I’d take my lovely family with me.

Situated on the south west cost, it’s quick and easy to get to (I found flights out there with First Choice) and makes a great base for people that want to explore.
Pompeii, Naples and Rome are all in day-tripping distance on the mainland (my inner archaeologist has been gagging to visit Pompeii for years and Naples and Rome would satiate my foodie and shopping obsessions), with boat trips to the glamorous islands of Ischia and Capri totally do-able too for when it’s time to do some sunbathing in style or to have a few child free spa treatments. Something else I’ve always wanted to do is to drive along the Amalfi coast and, again, Campania would make the perfect base for this.

The kids would just love getting to spend some time outside without having to put on full waterproofs and wellies. Can you imagine how amazing it would be to feel the sun on your face and the sand beneath your toes! I genuinely go all wistful at the thought of sitting out on a hotel balcony on a balmy Summer’s evening with a bottle of ice cold pinot grigio, and the kids fast asleep in the hotel room after a busy day sight-seeing or playing in the sea or the pool.

If you were able to jet off somewhere - anywhere - tomorrow, where would you choose? xo
