Moominsummer Madness at Polka Theatre

At the weekend, Daisy and I were invited to Polka Theatre in Wimbledon to watch Little Angel Theatre's latest production, Moominsummer Madness.

Now I must confess that I was definitely the most excited out of the pair of us, having LOVED the Moomins in my youth. Although we regularly visit the theatre (we've seen Raymond Briggs' Father Christmas, The Gruffalo's Child, Peppa Pig and Ben & Holly all fairly recently) I did wonder whether this would keep Daisy's attention, seeing as the Moomins were characters that she wasn't familiar with. I also noticed before we went that the performance had a running time of 1hr 35minutes (including the interval) which meant it was going to be the longest play she'd ever had to sit through.

Of course I needn't have worried at all. Daisy loved every single second - and so did I! The puppets were fabulous, the lighting was the best I've seen in theatre puppetry (for the first time the actors/puppeteers genuinely weren't noticeable - they blended into the background and the puppets stood out a mile) and the music was beautiful.

Daisy's favourite character was the policeman; he was responsible for a lot of the audience participation and she found it hilarious when, just before the interval, he told all the children that they absolutely must NOT have any ice cream!

This year is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tove Jansson, the author of the Moomins - and what a way to celebrate, by bringing her characters to life on the stage! If you are looking for something to do during the summer holidays Daisy and I would definitely recommend going to see this production.

I must also comment on what an utterly lovely place Polka Theatre is. This was our first visit and it most definitely won't be our last. Aside from the smashing, super spacious and very child friendly theatre, there is also a lovely little cafe, a great play area (complete with old fashioned rocking horse), garden and book corner and a very impressive teddy bear collection to see. The best bit is that you can pop in to play for free, and you really must it if you're passing by.

Moominsummer Madness runs until 16th August 2014. Tickets cost £13.50 per person (tickets required for all adults and children over 12 months, or for children over 6 months for the all age performances) and are available here.
