Style ♥

In January 2013 myself and Alice from Project Wanderlust launched a daily style challenge called the #NYNYStyleProject. At the time it was the only UK style challenge doing the rounds on Instagram and as such had a very large and loyal following. Quite simply, we wanted to encourage women to feel better about themselves and to help inspire them to inject a little glamour into their day-to-day lives. It was originally only meant to be a one off (hence the 'New Year New You' name) but lasted almost a year - and that Summer, Kara from Innocent Charms Chats and Carissa from Little Likely Lads also joined the team.

And now, after a bit of a break, I'm thrilled to announce that the style project is back! With a new name and the full team behind it, we're hoping that it will be bigger and better than ever before.

My personal story.
After the birth of my two daughters, I realised I was on the slippery slope to mumsyness. I was too busy looking after my girls to pay any attention to my appearance. I stopped losing the baby weight I had gained, I stopped wearing make up, I stopped taking any interest in fashion {something I had always been obsessed with pre-babies}. The problem wasn't that I was no longer stylish - it was that I was unhappy and had lost my passion and my motivation. So I decided I had to do something about it.

I threw out all the old maternity comfies I was still wearing. I emptied my make up bag of the 10 year old mascaras and lipsticks I wouldn't wear again. I decided to devote an hour or two out of the week to myself. Me time! What was that again? Then with a few basics and a couple of old favourites I was ready to find my style mojo again.

I set to work building up my new wardrobe {piece by piece, as and when my finances allowed it} and at the same time, building up my confidence. I learnt to love my new mama's body and discovered the styles that suit it. I rediscovered my love of beauty products and make up (and finally accepted that it's okay to want and have a bit of me time!). I searched for, and found, new labels and products and ways of shopping that fit into my budget and my lifestyle.

These days, when it comes to clothes, the things that are important to me are practicality, comfort and affordability - but that doesn't mean I'm prepared to compromise style. I have a different body shape, a not-so-healthy bank balance and a lifestyle that means I'm on my feet for 95% of the day so yes, I've had to change the way I look at fashion - but I'm not prepared to give it all up forever and succumb to the stereotype of frumpy mum. And if you don't want to, you don't have to either!

How to play.

Find the day's prompt on the month's list. We publish these in advance, usually around the 25th of the month.
Interpret the prompt as you will - and incorporate your interpretation into your daily style, health, fitness or beauty regime. It can be an item of clothing you own, a piece you've seen and are lusting after, something you've done that made you feel better about yourself.
Take a photo!
Share it on Instagram or Twitter. Don't forget to use the hashtag #TheStyleProject so that other people can find your pictures.
Search the hashtag yourself and check out other people's photos. Like what you see? Tell the photographer! It's a nice way to get to know eachother and a lovely confidence boost too.
You don't have to join in every single day! Sometimes it's just not possible - and that's okay! Dip in and out whenever you like, and if you're not able to take your own photos, look at other people's for inspiration.

Most importantly - have fun!

  1. I'd love to try and join in so that I don't become part of the frumpy mum/grandma stereotype! :)

  2. I would love to start this, I am just coming up to a big birthday '30'! and I look back and think wow my kids are now 9 and twins 5 that I have just spent the past 9 yrs looking very mumsy! BUT it doesn't need to be like that and I think this challenge has come at the right time! My blog is called 'Renovation Bay-Bee' so I think it is time to 'renovate' myself!!
