Lunch at Gordon Ramsay's Maze Grill

In a previous life (that would be pre-kids) I worked in wealth and asset management in Mayfair. I worked ridiculously hard - the hours were insane - but I got to have a lot of fun too. My colleagues and I would head out on the town most nights, once we'd shut down our laptops and topped up our make up. One bar we frequented regularly was Maze Grill, Gordon Ramsay's restaurant on Grosvenor Square. It did (still does) the most amazing food - with steak and sushi their specialities - but even better were it's super potent cocktails; a few of those were the perfect way to celebrate the end of the working week.

Over Easter, I was invited back to Maze for lunch, but this time it was set to be a much more civilised affair, as Daisy was invited too!

They have recently introduced a new incentive to encourage families to dine together - and to dine in style. At weekends, from 12pm to 6pm, kids eat free - and we were asked to try out the children's menu.

So on Saturday, Daisy and I planned a big girls day out in the West End with Alice from An Essex Wife and her eldest daughter, Scarlett.

After a trip to The Disney Store on Oxford Street, we headed round the corner to the restaurant. That's the first thing to point out - Maze's location is perfect for a break from shopping as Oxford Street and Bond Street are just minutes away.

On arrival the girls were treated like royalty. We were seated in the dining room and given our menus; the kids ones were printed on little envelopes that contained a chefs hat and colouring pencils and books. I was a little disappointed to see only three choices for them - and nothing vegetarian at all - especially seeing as the main menu was so extensive but, in their defence, Maze had chosen three popular dishes and Daisy would have happily eaten all of them.

Seeing as it was past midday, Alice and I ordered a glass of fizz each which we sipped while we perused the grown ups menu and the girls got to meet the head chef. We were talked through the different cuts of meat on the steak board by our server which was fabulous - next time I fully intend to try the Wagyu "9th Grade" steak - which comes from Japanese cows that live a life of luxury, being fed sake and beer and getting daily massages!

This time, however, Alice and I both opted for the chicken caesar salad, with sides of chips and mac and cheese, Daisy went for sausages and mash from the children's menu and Scarlett, pasta bolognese. (You can view the full a la carte menu here, and there are also lunchtime specials - Saturday's was a salt beef sandwich and a beer for £14).

The meals were all a huge success - four clean plates were returned to the kitchen - and then came pudding! The girls received complimentary bowls of chocolate ice cream whilst Alice and I had an after dinner cocktail (a Bramble in my case and a T10 Collins for her) and shared a chocolate honeycomb mousse.

The service was faultless; the staff couldn't do enough for us. The food was utterly divine, albeit a rather expensive meal out for a Saturday afternoon (the food bill should have come to £76 for the four of us - that's excluding the cocktails) but it was an utterly lovely, decadent treat - and the perfect refuel before we returned to the shops to continue with our shopping (and let the girls have a go in a photo booth!).

It was lovely to be given the chance to return to my old stomping ground and I would most definitely take my family back there again for a treat. I would like to see a few extra dishes on the children's menu though (small kids portions of sushi would be great - my girls love it!).

Thanks to the staff at Maze Grill for looking after us, and to Alice and Scarlett for being fabulous lunching companions! xoxo

DISCLAIMER: We were given a complimentary meal in exchange for this honest review.

  1. I love Maze, great restaurant, I didn't know they were kid friendly though so that's something new!

  2. Gorgeous pics - I too didn't know that Maze were so child friendly. Love the idea of a cocktail instead of a pudding!
